Discipleship involves more than claiming to be a Christian or attending worship. It is a lifestyle from the heart.

What does the Word of God tell us about life as a disciple?

In Mark 8:34-35 Jesus shocks his crowd declaring, “If anyone wants to be my disciple, he must deny himself, pick up his cross, and follow me.” For Jesus, the cross signified his death. If we wish to follow Jesus we must pick up our cross, that is, to die to ourselves and live for him.

  • Discipleship involves serving Jesus as Lord of our life rather than living my way. Disciples seek to follow and imitate Christ. Their perspective is eternity and not the world. Jesus promised God will supply our kingdom when we prioritize His. “Seek first the Kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things shall be added unto you.” Matthew 6:33

Servants Of God and Others

As the express image of God and Messiah, Jesus served as the perfect example for how we ought to serve God and others.

John 13:14-15 Christ Jesus instructs His disciples:
“If I then, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also ought to wash one another's feet. For I have given you an example, that you should do as I have done to you.”
Mark 9:33-36
“Then they came to Capernaum. When He was in the house, He asked them, “What were you arguing about on the way?” But they were silent, because on the way they had been arguing with one another about who was the greatest. Sitting down, He called the Twelve and said to them, “If anyone wants to be first, he must be last of all and servant of all.”

2 Timothy 4
“Before God and Christ Jesus, who is going to judge the living and the dead, and by His appearing and His kingdom, I solemnly charge you: proclaim the message ; persist in it whether convenient or not; rebuke, correct, and encourage with great patience and teaching. For the time will come when they will not tolerate sound doctrine, but according to their own desires, will accumulate teachers for themselves because they have an itch to hear something new. They will turn away from hearing the truth and will turn aside to myths. But as for you, keep a clear head about everything, endure hardship, do the work of an evangelist, and fulfill your ministry."

Ephesians 4:12

“And He personally gave some to be apostles, some prophets, some evangelists, some pastors and teachers, for the training of the saints in the works of ministry, to build up the body of Christ, until we all reach unity in the faith and in the knowledge of God’s Son, growing into a mature man with a stature measured by Christ’s fullness.”

1 Corinthians 3:5-11
"So, what is Apollos? And what is Paul? They are servants through whom you believed, and each has the role the Lord has given. I planted, Apollos watered, but God gave the growth. So then neither the one who plants nor the one who waters is anything, but only God who gives the growth. Now the one who plants and the one who waters are equal, and each will receive his own reward according to his own labor. For we are God’s co-workers."
